321 Clementi – 8 Eateries Dishing Out Delicious Fare at Affordable Prices

321 Clementi is a family-friendly destination that has both food and entertainment options. WE Cinemas, which sits on level 3, is extremely popular and it’s not easy getting a ticket to catch a movie here. The WE in WE Cinemas is actually Eng Wah (yes, that Eng Wah Cinemas that we are all familiar with) flipped backwards – isn’t that interesting? If you’re here to catch a movie, why not fill your tummies first before you hop on the entertainment express?

#01-12 Prata Alley

Begin the gastronomical experience with uniquely plated dishes prepared by Prata Alley. Each dish undergoes an intricate assembling process before they are served. Quench your thirst with a Bandung Zilla ($4.70) while waiting for the stars to arrive.

I’ll recommend The Big One ($12.90 – a “pizza”, made with a roti prata-dough base, topped with basil leaves, mozzarella cheese, red chilli pepper and chicken pepperoni. Bite into the “pizza” to reveal a filling of capsicum, shiitake mushroom bits, pineapples, mozzarella cheese, and pesto chicken.

For a healthier option, go for the Wrap It In ($8.90), which features juicy pesto chicken tenders, melted cheese, greens, and honey yogurt dressing all wrapped in indian wheat (atta) bread! The Maggie Combo Chop ($9) is great for those with a big appetite, what with the generous amount of maggi, chicken chops, criss-cut fries, and a sunny-side up.

*Enjoy a 15% discount with a minimum spending of $20!

#01-13 Wimi

Looking for a sweet treat to beat the heat? You have to pop by Wimi, a store selling Thai coconut ice cream then! Wimi embraces a takeaway concept. Grab an Ice Cream in Coconut Husk Set ($5), which has 2 generous scoops of flavoured ice-cream served in half a Thai coconut husk, and 3 toppings of your choice as well as a small cup of coconut water.

Here’s the scoop on Wimi – the ice cream tastes exactly like the ones you’ll find along the streets of Thailand. That’s because the recipe for the ice cream is based on recipes from actual ice cream vendors in Bangkok. I’ll recommend pairing the ice cream with crunchy red ruby and sweet nata de coco. Do look out for their new item, the Coco Island Sundae ($5.50) which comes with 4 toppings, crushed peanuts and gula melaka sauce.

*Wimi is having a 1-for-1 Husk ice cream promotion this coming December!

#01-10/11 Toasties

Toasties is the next up-and-coming Halal joint that’s joining the sandwich kingdom. What makes Toasties stand out is its use of fresh ingredients that are prepared in a healthier manner. Pick from a variety of ready-to-eat sandwiches, including one of my personal favourites – the Italian Trio ($7.70 ala carte, $10.70 with set meal) which consists of beef salami, beef bacon and pepperoni. The excellent meaty flavours make it a highly palatable choice especially amongst meat lovers. You get to choose from nachos, cheesy franks or cheesy wedges when you opt for the set meal.

Another healthy alternative is the Chicken Katsu ($7.40 ala carte, $10.40 with set meal), which comprises a baked breaded chicken patty. Toasties will be unveiling a new Satay Sandwich ($8.90) soon. Think house-grilled chicken chunks dripping with sweet and spicy peanut sauce. Apart from their ready-to-eat sandwich choices, diners can also customize their artisan breads from scratch, starting either with a 6-inch or foot-long bread.

*At the start of December, flash this blogpost to enjoy $1 off your order!

#02-10 Sun Lok Noodle House

New to 321 Clementi is Sun Lok Noodle House, which moved here from Superbowl Jurong on 15 October 2017. Despite its relocation, the eatery has retained its interior design which carries oriental influences. One of the bestsellers, the Congee in Lychee Boat Style ($6++), is named as such because this rice-based dish used to be served on sampans in a certain part of China. Ingredients such as fish slices, cuttlefish and peanut kernels are added to the congee and boiled for a short while. The porridge is extremely creamy and smooth.

Get your money’s worth with the Fried Crispy Noodle with Seafood ($9++), which has luxurious seafood items such as scallops and snakehead fish slices, on a bed of pan-seared egg noodles. You won’t be able to resist the Deep Fried Silver Fish with Pepper & Salt ($9++). Each piece of silver fish is well-seasoned and crispy, and remained so even till the end of our meal here. For seafood lovers, the Fried King Prawn with Salad & Wasabi ($18++) will amaze.

#02-08 Charcoal Thai

Prepare yourself for a bizarre experience with the add-on selection of King Durian Steamboat ($14.95) when you get either the Mookata Set ($39.95), the Thai Beauty Collagen Set ($48.95) or a combination of both Mookata + Thai Beauty Collagen Set ($57.95). Witness the bubbling and melting of the king durian! The taste of the durian broth is expectedly exotic, with a pungent sweetness. Surprisingly, the ingredients do taste good when cooked inside the durian steamboat.

If you find the add-on too peculiar, you could choose the more traditional Rich Cheese Mookata ($14.95), or do away with the add-on. Charcoal Thai’s offerings are pretty commendable – they also offer the conventional Mookata buffet (weekday lunch Mon-Fri :$15.95, weekday dinner Mon-Thur : $20.95. Weekend lunch Sat-Sun, PH : $20.95, weekend dinner Fri-Sun, Eve/PH : $23.95). Students can enjoy the buffet at more affordable prices (weekday lunch Mon-Fri : $13.95, weekday dinner Mon-Thur : $18.95, not applicable on PH).

*Starting from 1 December 2017, diners can enjoy a FREE cheese mookata for every mookata set purchased.

#02-05/06/07 Saizeriya

As a frequent patron of Saizeriya, I never knew the ingredients were brought in from Northern Italy! Do you know that their bestseller Oven Grilled Escargots ($5.90) was included in the menu despite having its origins in France because of its location’s close proximity to Northern Italy? Each escargot is coated with garlic butter and sauteed onions.

The Squid Ink Pasta ($5.90), which is a popular dish in Venice, Italy, is another hot favourite. Beyond it’s inky-black looks, its taste is surprisingly refreshing especially when you add a touch of extra virgin olive oil. New to Saizeriya’s menu is the Quattro Formaggi Pizza ($7.90), which is topped with parmesan, mozzarella, buffalo mozzarella, and gouda cheese. Remember to pair your meal with a glass of red or white wine.

#03-02 Mei Heong Yuen Dessert

Founded in 2003, one of the seven Mei Heong Yuen Dessert outlets has opened in 321 Clementi. Did you notice that the trademark logo of Mei Heong Yuen resembles a peanut? That’s because the chain’s owners owns the iconic Farmer Brand peanuts that we (or our grandparents) are all too familiar with. Our all-time favourite would have to be the Sesame Paste ($3.50) from the healthy paste range. It possesses a smooth and thick consistency, and isn’t too heavy.

Mei Heong Yuen also offers 21 varieties of snow ice. The sweet Mango Strawberry Snow Ice ($6.50) is definitely a crowd-pleaser – it is especially popular with kids as they love bursting the flavoured pop balls. The Chendol Snow Ice with Gula Melaka ($6.50) is also well loved amongst those with a penchant for tradition. The special desserts range offers specially curated Asian desserts such as the Mango with Pomelo & Sago ($5). The sweet treats here would delight the young, and especially the old.

*Enjoy a complimentary bowl of sesame or peanut paste, when you spend a minimum of $7.

#03-03 WE Cinemas

Alas, the experience that we’ve all been waiting for – first class seats complete with VIP dining menu and concierge service. Sip on a glass of Noblesse Sauvignon Blanc ($13/glass) as you sit through the first few adverts before the film starts. Like a good cinemagoer, reach into a box of Popcorn ($6 for regular, $7 for large) while laughing (or crying) along with the crowd.

The Fish & Chips ($15) has got you covered if you’re famished – expect delicious tempura fish fillets served with wasabi mayo and sea salt fries. If you’re looking for something to share, the First Class Chicken Satay Platter ($12) might be an excellent choice. As the film comes to a close, indulge in premium Haagen Dazs Ice Cream ($6 for 1 cup, $10.50 for 2 cups) for an even sweeter ending.
