Located along Beach Road, 2-week-old Fatty Thai is the newest stall in Lim Si Mi Café. Diners don’t really have much of a choice here as the stall only has 2 dishes.
The two dishes are a Thai version of our local favourite wanton mee, which is also called Ba Mee Kiao Moo Dang, and Khao Ka Moo(braised pig trotters with rice).
Run by three 22 year olds, Edmund, Darryll and Wei Zhe, Fatty Thai’s story is a rather peculiar one. Edmund shared that the trio was having a holiday in Thailand and was nursing a hangover. The first thing that they had was a Thai-style wonton mee at a random street stall, and things rolled into motion since then. The wanton mee, which was drier as compared to the saucy Singapore counterpart, gave them the inspiration to start their own business and bring Thai-style wanton mee to Singapore.
Fun fact: The stall was named Fatty Thai because the three hawkers are all chubby.
It might look plain, but the Ba Mee Kiao Moo Dang ($3/$4/$5) packs a lot of flavour. For $4, we received some blanched vegetables, 2 fried wantons, 3 soup wantons, and a good amount of char siew.
There was an abundance of pork lard, and lard oil, which coated every strand of noodle. I’m not a big fan of saucy wanton mee, so this drier version fared well with me.
Edmund also shared that he wanted some variety, hence he decided to put the Khao Ka Moo on the menu. We were told that everything is made in-house, even down to the salted vegetables.
The braised pig trotters with rice ($5/$7) came with half a braised egg, a handful of salted vegetables and some chilli sauce. Although the gelatinous skin was a bit tough, the meat was tender. We liked how the meat went well with the homemade chilli sauce.
